Mt. Massive stands tall with an elevation of 14,423 feet, making it the second-highest peak in Colorado, surpassed only by its neighbor, Mt. Elbert. Located in the Sawatch Range near the town of Leadville, Mt. Massive is a part of the massive San Isabel National Forest, offering one of the most stunning alpine experiences in the state. What sets Mt. Massive apart is its extensive summit ridge, which extends over three miles and encompasses five summits that rise above 14,000 feet. This gives the mountain more area above 14,000 feet than any other peak in the contiguous United States, providing hikers with breathtaking panoramic views and a sense of accomplishment few other mountains can offer.
For those venturing up Mt. Massive, it’s important to note the varied terrain, characterized by lush alpine meadows, expansive talus fields, and switchbacks that require careful navigation. The trail is popular among hikers and trail enthusiasts who enjoy challenging themselves not just with the elevation gain, but with the mentally invigorating task of navigating such a sprawling summit ridge. Wildlife enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that the area is home to a diverse array of fauna, including marmots, mountain goats, and the occasional pika, offering a unique opportunity to witness these creatures in their natural habitat. Due to its size and majestic appearance, Mt. Massive serves as a must-visit destination for those seeking one of the quintessential high-altitude experiences in Colorado.
