Information

Mount Yale stands at an impressive 14,197 feet and is part of the Collegiate Peaks in the Sawatch Range of the Colorado Rockies. Located near Buena Vista, it provides hikers with spectacular views of its neighboring peaks and the Arkansas Valley below. Its prominence in the Collegiate Peaks makes it a popular choice for those seeking a manageable but rewarding alpine ascent. The mountain's moderate slopes and accessible ridge make it an inviting challenge compared to some of the more technical 14ers in Colorado, ideal for hikers looking to hone their high-altitude skills.

An interesting piece of Mount Yale’s history is its early association with Yale University. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a tradition developed among students and alumni from both Mount Princeton and Mount Yale's namesake universities. They would embark on an unofficial competition, adding stones to the summit cairn in hopes of claiming to have the tallest mountain. While this tradition no longer continues, the mountain's enduring connection to academic rivalry adds a historical element to its allure. The mountain also stands as a testament to the spirit of adventure and exploration, offering hikers an engaging trek through a landscape dotted with wildflowers, alpine tundra, and occasionally, mountain goats.
